Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Have you heard of a news report of a terrible accident that left the victim totally wrecked, and hopeless? Or of children with congenital birth defects that often lead to a low self-esteem when children grow up. Or of  few endangered species that needed to be salvaged from its debilitating condition? Thanks to medical breakthrough, there’s the science of reconstructive surgery!

Many people are opting for plastic surgery because they want something fixed that they think is wrong, or they simply want to look younger. This may be something about the face, but there are things that can be done on other parts of the body. There are other good reasons why this type of surgery must be done besides enhancing one’s beauty or looks. Those who have been in accidents or are born with problems can choose reconstructive plastic surgery. This may seem pointless, but it can help a person feel normal, which can change their lives for the better.

Reconstructive plastic surgery is not always an elective surgery.  Someone in the operating room after a bad accident may want to get on with their lives after being saved. But it does not always happen that way, as the operation to save a life is often quite traumatic for the body. Reconstructive plastic surgery come at a later date. It often depends on what happened. If something is going to be a threat to life, the person can may right away be on the table to prevent these types of problems.

Most of the reconstructive plastic surgery  done for victims of accidents are  on the face. The face is vulnerable and that is what we present to the world. When an accident happens that changes our face, we can really feel the effects of this phenomenon on our lives. This is probably why majority of reconstructive plastic surgery is done on the face. We can cover the scars on the body with clothes, but the face is always in the open air. That is why it is difficult to wear a wound that has changed the way we look.

You can have reconstructive plastic surgery on other parts of the body.  Someone with scars on their arms and legs may be very conscious about them. If they are bad enough, reconstructive plastic surgery can help. Even if it does not always make things back the way they were before, there is often a huge improvement. For someone with these scars, it  can make a huge difference.

There are times when reconstructive plastic surgery is not the result of an accident of any type. There are children born with cleft palate who may feel self-conscious. There are surgeries that can help to make this look better for them. There are other things that can happen for the child is born with some sort of difference that will make them feel horrible as they grow. In these cases, reconstructive plastic surgery is quite literally life changing. Once this is done at a young age, the effects of deformation may not be felt as badly as if they are left until the child is older.
